Jon Sweeney: Aspiring Developer
Background
Greetings! My name is Jonathan Sweeney and I am a student at Epicodus. Computers and I haven’t always gotten along.
I am originally from Nebraska. Thankfully, my parents brought me with them to Portland when I was young. Even though I have travelled across the globe, Portland will always feel like home.
In 2005, I enlisted into the Oregon Army National Guard as an Infantryman. Although I joined the ORNG, I spent most of my time on active duty. Since graduating basic training, I have visited 9 countries, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute Support. While serving in Afghanistan, I was put in charge of my unit’s communication equipment. Quickly, I became fascinated how the equipment worked. With some mentorship, I started programming while overseas. It wasn't long before programming became a passion of mine.
Not only did I enjoy learning how to code, but my time debugging code made an impact on my military service. I noticed that my programming experience improved my trouble shooting skills. This was valuable when trouble shooting communication problems I encountered during combat operations.
Current
Today, computers and I have an understanding. I am pursuing my dream as a student at Epicodus. Every day, I learn more about programming and add a few more tools to my toolbox.
When I'm not in school, I can be found getting lost in the wilderness, at a local coffee shop, reading a book, or exploring a corner of the world.
